Here's my idea for a potential annual collaboration thing that FPFM could do. I've already brought this idea up with some people, so it may seem familiar to some people:
Basically what it is is a covers album, but a bit of it is inspired by AV Club's Undercover series of videos. How that works is there's a list of songs already thought out by the people in charge from artists ranging from Kanye West to Chumbawamba to the Go-Gos. Basically artists show up to the AV Club studios, pick a song from the list and cover the song on air. (Iron & Wine has covered George Michael, The Hold Steady have covered Huey Lewis, The Trail of The Dead have covered Indigo Girls, etc. It's very up in the air like that.)
My idea is similar, with some major differences. Instead of having a master list of songs to pick from that one person could have picked from, the list will be made up of songs that everyone involved has picked out.
Here's the process I envision:
- An artist decides they want to participate.
- They get in touch with me (The guy running it) and send 3 already established songs by any artist or group of any genre of music to me via PM. The only stipulation is they all need to be from differing genres of music (Or different eras) and should be easy enough to find on the internet for someone to cover. It can't be too obscure because then it would make it difficult for someone to familiarize themselves with the piece.
- After enough songs are gathered from all interested parties, the master list is assembled in the main thread. Those participating then pick one song from the list to cover. (They can't pick any of the three they submitted themselves.)
- The artist then covers the song and submits their final version for the collaboration. They can re-interpret, re-imagine, or otherwise dick around with it in any way they see fit so long as they do something with it.
- The final album is submitted.
- PROFIT.
That last step might be tricky.
PARTICIPANTS (So Far):
- Futures Passed/Steve Brand
- A Problem Like Maria
- ThornBrain
- Sawtooth
