Should Parents Be Questioned?

Postby Steve » Wed Sep 16, 2009 9:40 pm

As a temporary governing power of their children, parents have almost absolute authority over their kids. We all know that those in power can let the power go to their head or abuse it, and that there are some extreme cases where parents abuse their children, often when carrying out punishment for broken rules.

Should there be any sort of balance of power to help in the less extreme cases? Parents will more times than not say "no" because they are in that position of power, and you are proposing to take away from that power. However, there is some backing reason to this response; with limited power, they might not be able to teach their child properly.

I sometimes ask myself this.

Sometimes, even if my mother says no to something, I tend to take the said matter into my own hands, the majority of the time it turns out good.

The only person who should question their parents is the child.

While younger children to an extent aren't too educated or knowledgeable, after a certain point, they're able to think for themselves. Parents don't know everything, and they certainly cannot understand how their kids are feeling 95% of the time about a certain rule, so I think the parents should be open to suggestions and not just act like their way of thinking is superior (which is much like how my father thinks).
